There are two main types of myocardial infarction (heart attack)

ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI):

This type of heart attack occurs when there is a complete blockage of a coronary artery, leading to a significant portion of the heart muscle being deprived of blood and oxygen. It is called “ST-segment elevation” because it typically shows on an electrocardiogram (ECG) as elevation of the ST segment. STEMI is considered more severe and requires immediate medical intervention, often with procedures like angioplasty and stent placement.

Non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI):

In this type of heart attack, there is a partial blockage or reduced blood flow in a coronary artery. NSTEMI may not always show the characteristic ST-segment elevation on an ECG, but it is still a serious condition. Treatment may involve medications, lifestyle changes, and sometimes invasive procedures depending on the extent of the blockage.

It’s essential to seek immediate medical attention if you suspect a heart attack, as early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for a better outcome.
